Challenge Wales Events brings bigger and better events to Wales

Bringing bigger and more enjoyable public sporting events to Wales is the aim of a new business based in Swansea.

As more and more people opt for mass runs and other sports events, Challenge Wales Events says there needs to be innovative thinking to keep activities fun and enjoyable, and to make sure Wales becomes a prime location.

GB Triathlete Adam Newton from Swansea and business partner, Port Talbot steel-worker Graham Rowland, are constantly scouring the world for new, and fun ideas.

Challenge Wales Events has been supported with funding from Robert Owen Community Banking in Newtown.

Events range from trail running on the stunning Afan Mountain in the Country Park, to Duathlons, Aquathons and night running.

“Growing numbers of people are taking part in mass running and sporting events in Wales, and all around the world,” said Adam.

‘We believe Wales has such beautiful scenery and places to compete, that it can become one of the leading locations in the world.”

Above all, Challenge Wales Events wants people to have fun when they take part. “We are very excited about what we do. We continue to be dedicated to changing the game and making sure that we reward people for their hard work and dedication to their sport,” he added.

Challenge Wales Events has received support from Robert Owen Community Banking (ROCB), which provided a £6000 loan from the Startup Loans Company (SULC).  ROCB is one of the organisations in Wales administering SULC loans at a fixed 6% and between £500 and £25,000 to each principal of a business.

Jackie Milton of ROCB said they were delighted to offer support:”Challenge Wales Events is an exciting business with a wealth of ideas and enthusiasm. As well as creating local jobs, the firm will bring visitors to there local area, and help to promote Wales.

“The loan has given the firm a much-needed capital base and has enabled them to buy essential equipment.”

Adam, 25, is a leading triathlete having been in the GB team and reached the European Championships. He has also represented Wales in cross-country running. Graham, 52, is a prominent distance runner and has competed in many international events.

Rebecca Newton, also 25, is a nurse who participates in running and triathlon events purely for the fun and the challenge. She loves the euphoric moments seen at the finish line and relishes all the help and hard work the team and other local organisations provide to ensure a successful event.

The firm’s main focus is on Trail running events on Afan Forest Park . An Aquathon was also held recently, starting from the 360 Beach Cafe on Swansea sea front, and in February the popular Hoka One One half marathon was organised.

Events are growing in numbers, with up to 500 competing.

In July an innovative trail marathon is being arranged at the country park and this is expected to draw competitors from the UK and beyond.

Inspiration for the business has come from many sources. A visit to compete in a race at French ski resort Alpe D’Huez last year gave Adam new ideas, and he has recently returned from training in California.

“We try to pick up ideas for doing things differently whoever we can, and are always to change things up,” he commented. “People want to enjoy their sport and have fun at the same time. It should never be boring.”

Safety is, of course paramount at all times ad Challenge Wales Events has a 100% safety record. “We place great emphasis on this as you would expect. We have close links with Mountain Rescue who give is terrific support.”
